About Greensboro, North Carolina

Cultural diversity and historical change highlight the themes throughout Greensboro’s beginnings to present day. Key events and images of: the Revolutionary War, racial equality issues, the cotton trade, stunning rural beauty, a ranking of tops-in-US for fine arts, and as the “pottery capitol,“ are all visual images of who and what Greensboro has become and where history is recognized and embraced. Historic buildings, national landmarks, exceptional cultural offerings, and award-winning choices for fine dining and entertainment make Greensboro a sought-after place in North Carolina.

In the last days of the Civil War, interestingly enough, Greensboro was the final capitol of the Confederacy. The Richmond, VA, capital had become too dangerous. So, for the last five days of the Confederacy, Greensboro was the capitol of the south. The Confederacy ended here. Almost 100 years later, another country-shaking event happened. In 1960, four black students sat at a Woolworth’s lunch counter, initiating a sit-in that lasted for months. The original counter was important enough culturally to be saved and shipped to Washington, DC by the Smithsonian Institution. It’s odd now to reflect on those troubles with segregation, then to flash forward to today when there are refugees galore, including Sudanese, Bosnians, Serbians, Ukranian Jews, and others. Greensboro’s diversity is well known.
